PVC Compounds Plastisols

Plastisols are used for manufacturing of wide range of products as rainboots, hand gloves, upholstery fabrics and tanks, small moulded parts, drum lining, strippable vinyl coating, crown caps lining, electrical insulation filters & covering of electroplating jigs and hangers and for decoration.

Plastisol is a physical mixture of vinyl resins and compatible plasticizers. Unlike most fluid materials they consist of 100 % solids and do not require the evaporation of solvents or water. Fusion at elevated temperatures drives the plasticizer into the resin and changes the plastisol into a homogeneous solid plastic material with the same excellent physical properties commonly associated with other vinyls-flexibility, toughness, abrasion and chemical resistance, unlimited color possibilities and excellent resistance to aging. The Storage of plastisol should not exceed 27 °C (room temp). It should be stored away from the all sources of heat & avoid direct sunlight also.

To obtain the maximum physical properties plastisol must be fused at a temperature of 180-200°C. It is important that the entire mass reach the fusion temperature. The plastisol is heated in various types of heating ovens. The most common of them is an air circulating oven.

Application:
  • Screen printing Plastisol It is one the most important application of the plastisol. It is a form of ink that is used to print the textile fabrics in a similar fashion as we do that for the screen printing of the paper. The mesh size of the screen to be used here is 80-90 mesh. It gives good coverage on the surface of the fabric to be coated. In case we require less coverage then the mesh size can be increased to give less output of the plastisol ink during the squeezing activity. A detailed method is provided in the Info sheet- plastisol for screen printing.
  • Spread Coating or knife coating is done on the fabrics to make leather cloth as well as it is done on the plastic web (made out of granules) to make artificial rugs and mats. the plastisol can be developed in conjunction with the specific application i.e. construction of the particular coater, operating speed, type of surface to be coated, desired degree of penetration and adhesion.
  • Strand Coating is where plastisol is used to coat filaments, particularly of fiber glass. It binds the individual fibers together, thereby increasing the tensile strength and abrasion resistance of the strands. Glass fiber thus coated with this solution are used for such end products as insect screening, woven upholstery and fiber hose cord. Coated cotton and metallic strands are used for clothesline and decorative tapes.
  • Metal Coating by plastisol are done for decorative or protective purpose. Typical applications are interior coatings on drums for shipping corrosive material, and exterior coatings for business machine cabinets. Plastisol may be applied by dipping in most common form. Plastisol are also coated for insulation purpose on the jig and hangers of electroplating plants. Where excellent adhesion of the plastisol to metal is required, the lacquer should be applied prior to coating.
